about

"Blue Luxuries is Grumpy Bear's statement for the new decade. As such, within its messages can be found confusion, addiction, devotion, angst, loss, frustration, the continual search for pleasure--all colored over with no small amount of humor (or, at the very least, a wry understanding of the futility of modern life and a winking eye at the attainment of gratification as a balm against that futility). Key to understanding Grumpy Bear's core tenet is a line from the album's penultimate track: Surrendering anxieties to revel in blue luxuries.

"Equal to Grumpy Bear's strength in variety of lyrical content on display here is their strength in variety of sound. Blue Luxuries skips from punk to shoegaze to noise rock to power pop and even throws in retro dance and industrial musique concrete for good measure, yet all of it sounds like Grumpy Bear. Although a listen to their backcatalogue will show that they've never settled on one sound or style and are quite fond of building sonic chimeras, Blue Luxuries seems to state without reservation that the future of music is a continuation of its past: continual evolution with plenty of reference points along the way."

Grumpy Bear is the passion project of two guys from a dry river valley in a desert state who were raised on their parents' record collections, '80s pop radio, MTV, and processed food. Grumpy Bear's music is self-recorded, -mixed, and -produced and doesn't fit very well in a specific genre, but indie rock, alt-folk, alternative, new wave, and post-punk are labels that get thrown around a lot. ... more
